New Partnerships, Supporters, Sponsors

The news in short.

1. AfrodeviA - Music4Change is partnering with Maxi Media in Abuja, Deji Falope's new media outfit, in running a project with NACA, under the name of Maxi Media while our registration is processing.

2. We have an office address in Abuja.

3. We have received some start-up funding from an unlikely source - Unicem, the Cement people. Thanks guys.

4. We have a presentation meeting with our first major sponsor scheduled for Tues/Wed next week. As expected, once we talk to the right people, they jump on the idea.

5. We also have a major well-wisher in Abuja who is offering help with everything.

6. My beautiful Sony Vaio laptop has packed in. It is entirely dead.

7. I've quit my day job.

Let's praise the Lord. I am off on a retreat until Sunday - worst possible timing but when it's time to reconnect, it is time to reconnect.

Shade Ladipo compered the evening. We waited until 7 to kick off, media coverage was provided by MBI, NewAge, Tell Magazine. Anke gave a quick presentation of what Music4Change is looking at doing, covering the benefits offered to private and public sector stakeholders; Ruggedman gave a presentation on what Music4Change is looking at doing from an artist’s point of view.

The message of goodwill from Prof Pat Utomi, as well as the greeting of support from Big Screen TV’s Deji Falope in Abuja were played. We introduced our crew, Wale Adesada and Jalingo, who both gave short statements, and opened the floor for discussion.

Questions were asked on practical aspects of our projects – we introduced the flagship initiative called Project Area, by Ruggedman, with Lagos State Government in support, and spoke about other initiatives we are in talks about.

The discussion became very lively with views differing widely on issues like profane language, messages in songs, the pressures of the media, and artistes’ need to fulfil the popular demand. There was consent on the need for this initiative though and the support from the artist community was clear.

The evening closed with a message of thanks by Shade around 9pm.

Initial reactions from the industry

If this is done now, you will not be a genius for having done it. You will only be doing what should have been done a long time ago. And that still doesn't make you crazy, but credit must be given to whom credit is due. And the fact it is done now can be referred to as a milestone in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

The industry is growing, it can only be a matter of time before Nigeria actually stands itself globally with its own originally ingenius indigenous style, be it in movies, music, fashion, style, etc.

Wudi Awa, Music Video Director

Beautiful initiative. We need a difference, a step in the right direction.

B.O.U.Q.U.I

Femi Kuti

Felabration and Music4Change

Fela is the God of putting messages into music. Do you think anyone else could have made music about things like Disunited United Nations, colonial mentality, anything he sung about, and make it half as funky? I think not.

Hence - this year's Felabration, the 10th anniversary of Fela's death, is the ideal time to launch Music4Change, an organisation which will hopefully push the Nigerian entertainment industry to realise their role in pushing this country forward.

We are calling all Nigerian artistes to come together in celebrating this country and do their part in pushing things into the right direction. Make us proud. Represent the new Nigeria - We are going places and it is up to all of you to lead the way.

Because, does anyone still listen to politicians? Not really. Who do people listen to? Guys and girls, ladies and gentlemen, my artiste friends, let me tell you - it is in your hands.

Just for example: If you celebrate 419 and blind materialism, congratulations, you have just given birth to the new materialistic Nigeria. Short-term fun but long-term irreparable damage.

If you, however, take a stand against cheats, thiefs and other criminals, you have done your bit in helping this country take its place among the nations of the world.

Nigeria has a huge amount of resources. Let's not waste any more time but let us all push together for this country to be as great as it could and should rightfully be.

Inauguration Speech - for Saturday

Nigeria. Opportunities, beauty, plenty of natural resources, plenty of talent. This country has been blessed in so many ways.

We all know that there are also so many ways in which Nigeria could do better.

What can entertainers do to really help make a difference, really bring this country forward?

Listen to Fela’s songs and tell me how you feel. Doesn’t he still make an incredible amount of sense, no matter if he talks about the disunited United Nations, colonial mentality, Water Foodo Lighty Housy Wahalla, or the nonsense of skin bleaching?

Today, all the positive messages Fela tried to get out to Nigerians are still just as valid. But we are a new generation. There are new ways, new messages we need to get out.

It is informed people who will stop allowing problems like corruption or HIV/Aids to destroy any more of this country’s riches. It is people who are proud of what they have who will finally stop looking abroad and thereby be cheated out of really investing all their resources at home. It is people who know what is happening that will finally stop allowing a few bad individuals to steal and cheat and give this country a bad name.

And who are Nigerians listening to every single day? Does any political speech ever really make a difference or touch anyone’s heart? How many NGOs, how much foreign funding, but what change does it really make to your everyday person?

Think jingles. Faceless corporations and political parties spend and spend and spend to get their message into a song which will enter people’s minds and hearts. Don’t you think it is time we use this same thinking to actually do something to positively influence people’s lives? What is it that can make kids love O’Noodles? Sorry to break this to you, it’s just a brand, it is not your friend. You have talent, use it wisely.

We need to help every single person in the entertainment industry realise how incredibly much you can do for your country. You are the people to now step up, take your responsibility, work on your own social conscience, and be aware how much what you say in your songs influences the direction this country is going in.

Music for Change in Nigeria needs every single artist to look into their hearts and take up this important role, both in their own songs and in small and big events we will use to entertain and push out messages and bring on this change for the better in Nigeria.

Quick intro

Music4Change realises and harnesses the power of the entertainment industry in the development of our nation.
